Preventative Care

We provide and strongly recommend bi-annual vaccinations and physical exams for your horse. In the spring months we vaccinate with Core EQ Innovator that has EWT/WN (Eastern and Western Encephalitis, Tetanus and West Nile) and Rabies all in one vaccine. This vaccine is done in the spring as most of the diseases are spread by mosquitoes.

We vaccinate spring and fall for Influenza and Rhinoneumonitis (EHV). These upper respiratory infections can be spread through none-to-nose contact and are quite contagious in barns.

Once a year we also vaccinate for Strangles, which is a strep infection causing enlargement in the lymph nodes. This vaccine is recommended for show horses and horses that are exposed to a large number of other horses.

During their yearly examination some problems can be found early like heart murmurs or cataracts for monitoring.

Equine Coggins Test

Coggins Test

This test for Equine Infectious Anemia is required for any horse being transported over state lines or to organized events such as horse showing or even trail rides.

It is a simple blood test usually performed early in the year as some states require a “current” Coggins test within the calendar year.

We use Global Vet Link along with our diagnostic lab to provide you with a “digital” result. We photograph your horse and download all of the information to Global Vet Link. The test results can be accessed at the Global Vet Link website for printing at your leisure.

See www.myvetlink.com for more information.

Deworming

Routine fecal exams are used to monitor the efficacy of the deworming program and will help us customize a horse’s deworming program to their needs depending on the amount parasites that are being shed.

Your horses deworming program will be designed to effectively remove parasites from your horse and to reduce the transmission of parasite eggs. Dewormers are strategically rotated to limit the chance that the parasites will become resistant to the drugs.

Various deworming programs exist and an individually tailored program should be designed specifically to your horse’s needs.

Dentistry

Dental care is essential to your horses’ overall health and performance.

We provide Power float dentistry and recommend that teeth be checked twice a year and usually floated annually. Correcting waves, hooks, ramps and incisors enables your horse to eat properly and perform optimally.
