Orthobiologic Therapies
Orthobiologic therapies are used to treat tendon, ligament and joint damage. When it comes to joint damage the routine joint injections with Hyaluronic Acid and steroids are sufficient but depending on the extent of the injury or if the horse has some underlying health conditions then orthobioligics are used. Some of those therapies are listed below.
Stem Cell Therapy
Stem Cell Therapy is a successful treatment for many tendons, ligaments and joint ailments. Stem cells are the body’s own undeveloped cells that can change into any type of cell to aid in the healing process of damaged tissue.
The cells are collected from the horse’s own fat or bone marrow. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for processing and then injected into the affected area for treatment. These cells along with the growth factors that are in the injection will aid in the healing of the affected tissue.
PRP | Platelet Rich Plasma
PRP is another successful way to treat some ligament injuries and joint damage.
Platelets are harvested stall side from a blood sample from the injured horse. Using a high-speed centrifuge and special filtration kits the cells are injected directly into the affected area to help expedite the healing process.
IRAP | Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein
Equine joints that are inflamed or swollen contain fluids that carry interleukins. These proteins play a major role in the deterioration of tissues like joint cartilage.
IRAP uses gene therapy to tackle the interleukins in the horse’s joint fluid by preventing the interleukins from attaching to tissues and prevents the damaging effects of interleukins.
The procedure begins with drawing blood from the horse into a specially prepared syringe. The blood is then incubated and processed at a local lab resulting in plasma abundant with IRAP. The IRAP is then injected directly into the inflamed joint. Typically, the harvested IRAP yields enough plasma to treat the horse weekly for three weeks.
Alpha2 EQ
Using our highspeed centrifuge we are able to make high volumes of Alpha2 Macroglobulins to treat all areas of the horse. The advantage of this therapy is the amount of product produced at each harvest. So treating larger volumes like Sacroiliac joints or necks is easier. This product can also be frozen and stored for up to a year for future therapies.
ProStride
A joint therapy that is above all. It is made stall side from your horses’ blood and centrifuged down to PRP (platelet rich plasma) to begin with. Then that PRP is put into a new specially prepared device for another spin in the centrifuge. During that spin the PRP is brought down to ProStride that adds in Alpha2 Macroglobulins, growth factors along with Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP). So, all in one treatment we get the benefits form PRP and IRAP with the need of only one treatment.
